Robyn and Julie's run took us from the Brown Dog Cafe in Goodwood, then on to the Scenic Hotel at Norton Summit and finished at Penfolds Cellar Door at Magill.

As you may remember, the Beach Picnic car run in 2010 din't go anywhere near the beach. The reason? It was cold and windy and threatening rain.

Instead we visited the Three Brother's Arms Ale House in Macclesfield where a virtual sand castle building display was provided by Robyn with the help of Julie. We discovered that if we did get to the beach they would have built a replica of the then recently devastated Haitian Royal Palace. After the memorable presentation we had our picnic back at the 'Chateau' in Glenunga.

Things went a lot better in 2011, although I do believe, Haiti is still in a sad and sorry state.

We gathered at Ruby's Cafe in Stirling then set forth in convoy. The Mini led the way while Alexander in his truck brought up the rear. About 10 other cars made up the space in between which sometimes stretched a little too far as evidenced by the convoy missing the turn to head towards Clarendon near the Blackwood Golf Course corner. The truck made good progress and after a few more regroupings of the cars and a rapid descent into Clarendon via Turner's Gully Road, we headed along Chapel Hill Road toward our first major stop - Seaview Winery. There we sampled the wines and enjoyed a break and the sunshine and took time to admire the car's new to the group - Mark and Don's MGB GT, Garth's (?) Porsche 911 and Wayne and Chris' days's old Porsche Cayenne (diesel - It only does 230 km/h as opposed to its petrol sibling which can go a further 20kp/h faster!).

The convoy then headed toward the beach and its final destination - Maslins. We parked in the north end car park at the bathing costume mandatory end. However disaster had struck the truck and it had failed to start back at Seaview. Rod went to the rescue, the truck duly started and after a scenic tour of that bit of the Fleurieu they joined us at the beach.

The main activity of the day then began - the sand castle building competition. It was obvious many had carefully pre-planned their structures and had brought along digging implements and accessories to place on their finished structures. Kay and Sal built an NGK spark plug castle to add "a car component" to the proceedings, and while holding a glass of crisp and fruity white told us that we were a car club not a food and wine club! Robyn and Julie had gone to great lengths in preparing their sand castle - a scale replica of the Sydney Opera House. Using her laptop Robyn used visuals of the building to ensure the building was correctly captured from each angle. Brenton and Clinton took a minimalist approach to the competition and re-created the "mostly underground" Coober Pedy. It came complete with and underground garage. Brenton and Jason created a castle with added bling and Rod and Alexander created the largest of the castles also along traditional lines. As there were five prizes on offer each group received a prize for their ingenuity and industriousness.

We then all reverted to being a food and wine club and enjoyed the tipples and morsels we had brought along.

Picnic enjoyed people drifted away to head back to town and suburban domestic bliss.

At the recent Car Club weekend away I believe all sorts of matters mechanical were discussed. I believe Peter Jones gave the group a long dissertation on the design evolution of the NGK spark plug.

Part of his speech I believe included these incisive comments:

"You should consult your engine tuner who should be able to advise you on the correct heat range to get the best from your engine. As a general rule, an engine may benefit from a colder grade of plug where modifications made have increased the temperature in the combustion chamber (increased turbo boost, nitrous oxide use, increased compression), colder plug will conduct heat away from the firing tip more quickly and thus help reduce detonation/plug damage. "

And . . .

"Generally speaking no. Plugs may not last quite as long as with a standard petrol engine and the ignition system may have a harder time generating a spark. The denser charge in the combustion chamber means a higher voltage is required to jump the gap. For this reason it may help to reduce the spark plug gap by 0.2mm. If spark plugs become prone to overheating then it may be necessary to replace with plugs one grade colder."

I was told the audience was in awe of Peter's vast knowledge.

Splitting The Lower Anti-roll Bar Ball Joint. You need to separate the anti-roll bar from the spring pan. This can be done at the joint at either the top or bottom of the “Link Anti-roll Bar” (84). If you have a ball-joint splitter then the bottom one is the easiest to do (bloody difficult otherwise so you’ll have to undo the top of the link). If you’re replacing the “mounting Rubber Anti-roll Bar” (81) now’s a good time whilst the main anti-roll bar is detached at one end.

The last Holden to wear the Kingswood badge was one of the variants of the WB series utility released in 1980. Although the WA and WB projects at Holden were meant to have resulted in all-new full-size cars, the 1973 fuel crisis and cost-cutting meant the scope of changes became more limited each time. Eventually, the WB project was condensed into a major upgrade of the luxury Statesman models and a facelift of the HZ-series commercial models with new headlights, tail lights, grilles and the updated Holden "Blue" six-cylinder engine (4.2 litre V8 optional). The Kingswood was now available on utility only with the panel van joining the One Tonner, but the 5.0 litre V8 engine was no longer officially offered as an available performance option although some were built. There were no passenger car versions of the Kingswood, their place in the Holden range having been absorbed by the Commodore. Production of the entire WB-series finished in 1984 when Holden announced they were vacating local production of large luxury and commercial vehicles—due to economics—to concentrate on their medium car range, i.e. Camira and Commodore, and imported Isuzu commercial product.

Facel started out by building bodies for other manufacturers before going it alone in 1954 with a De Soto-engined car called the Vega. Once the car became established the company rebranded itself Facel Vega, and the car became the FVS. From the original 4.5-litre V8, the FVS moved to 5.4-litre Chrysler power – and the tubular-framed chassis car boasted 335bhp. To rein in all that power, a brake servo was fitted in 1957, and disc brakes were an option the following year. It was a simple recipe and the quality was there, as was the driving experience.

Most details of the car are classified for security reasons. It is completely fitted with military grade armor at least five inches thick, and the wheels are fitted with run flat tires. Due to the thickness of the glass, much natural light is excluded, so a fluorescent halo lighting system in the headliner is essential. The car can seat seven people, including the president. The front seats two, and includes a console-mounted communications centre. A glass partition divides the front from back. Three rear facing seats are in the back, with cushions that are able to fold over the partition. The two rear seats are reserved for the president and another passenger; these seats have the ability to recline individually. A folding desk is between the two rear seats. Port Broughton Weekend Away

The weekenders all arrived Friday and settled in to watch the sunset and enjoy a shared meal.

Saturday, back to the now famous 'Camp Kitchen' for a communal brekkie before motoring to Wallaroo. First stop - refreshments. A leisurely walk on a small section of the heritage trail to get us though till lunch. A visit to the museum and the drive home. Bubbles on the beach at Fisherman's Bay before dinner at Palette to Palate followed by after dinner drinks.

Brenton, Jason and Bryan arrived Sunday morning for another big brekkie at the Dock of the Bay. Off we went via Mundoora to Redhill for lunch at the local pub after another museum visit. An easy motor to Snowtown (some folks were banking on that!) where it took Julie and Liz so long to buy our pies for tea, we were beginning to think it was the Sweeney Todd bakery.

Back through some beautiful green countryside to the Bute Hotel for more refreshments before the the drive home.

At this point, someone suggested that rather than just be a food and wine club, we should think about expanding to have a car component to Qcar. General decision - we need time to think about that!

The zoo is free range (just like the chooks). I have got that right haven't I? And a preserve for African animal species.

They're looking sheepish as they've just been busted planning a game that involved no hands and a water bottle.

Now I wasn't on the Ortum Leafs Run so I'm going to guess what occurred. I believe Brenton and Clinton organised it and that in general they headed hillswards. I hear lunch was had at the Bridgewater Inn, which is quite different to the Bridgewater Mill next door - by about $20 per spoonful.

Skippy Island

Above is a picture of Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island. You can stay in the lighthouse cottages, which is what QCar did over the June long weekend.

Organised by Brenton and Clinton (big thank you *mwah, mwah*), the weekend saw three cars and 10 people descend onto the unsuspecting isle.

We had a lovely crossing on the ferry, really calm - only took an hour. Rod's, Sal's and Brenton's cars - respectively a diesel Peugeot 306, a Kia Sorrento 4WD and a thirsty Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD made the crossing the rest of us leaving our respective 'means de transportatione' at home.

On the first afternoon we just settled in and took a look around the cape and environs. A brief heavy rain shower ended drinks on the verndah and saw us scamper. Luckily that was the extent of the 'weather' over the weekend. We had sun, sun, sun for the rest of the trip - but it was still pretty cold at night, or in the shade!

That night we had an entree of party pies, pasties and sausage rolls followed by soup - nice and warming.

The next day we visited Seal Bay and then travelled down to the end of the island to see Admiral's Arch and Remarkable Rocks. There were heaps of New Zealand fur seals at Admiral's Arch, more seals than were at Seal Bay and they were easier to see. Although the seals are Australian sea lions at Seal Bay.

Back at Cape Willoughby we had a curry night - we only got back there after dark and we had to take care on the roads not to run into any kangaroos. We saw several.

The next day six of us went to Kelly Caves and then we met up with the rest of the group at the Andermel Marron Farm. It's also a winery and a restaurant so we had a tasting before lunch and then we all tucked into the local cuisine. After lunch we visited the Island Pure Sheep Dairy, which was more fun than it sounds (due to two cute dairy men) and we had a taste of the various cheeses, fresh ones like haloumi and fetta. After that we visited a honey place, took a quick trip around Kingscote and then headed, again in the dark, dodging wildlife, back to home base.

The last night David cooked for the group. The dining room was set for 10 and he served the local haloumi (which Harvey fried) along with warmed Coriole Koroneiki olives and char grilled choizo. He then served a dish made up of layers of tortillas interspersed with layers of wilted greens and parmesan. Done in a frying pan, the cheese melts the layers together. He then served up a beef roast with a heap of different roast vegies and two types of leafy greens.

On our last day we went for a tour of the lighthouse. See panorama above - it's taken rom the balcony at the top of the lighthouse - a great view. Then we packed up and set off for Chapman River Wines which was on our way back to the ferry. It was the most beautiful place with great wines and they served one of the best platters ever. We did a bit of sight seeing around the area and by that time it was time to get back to the ferry and the trip home.

Once up on a time Rodderick Blanchard had a lovely little house on a suburban street with a big back yard. He decided to hold a party - a Christmas party.

"Who shall I hold a party for?" Rod asked himself. Thinking "yes" I shall use the shortened form of my very long name for the rest of this fairy tale.

"I could hold it for the car club I'm currently the King of He mused to himself or I could hold it for the curry dinner club people," he thought.

He then grabbed a glass of ruby red current juice and wandered into his big backyard with the lawn and nice roses.

On the lawn Rod noticed a frog. A big fat frog. The frog croaked and then jumped away out of our story.

Then Rod had a 'Eureka' moment. (Man in bath tub discovering the displacement of volume, not the stockade type Eureka moment.)

"I could hold the party for both the curry and the car people."

And so He did. He decorated his back yard in the finest fashion befitting the style of the season and everyone came along and they all had a lovely lovely time. And here's the pictures from it . . .

Now this is Rod's big back yard. Big enough to hold a little car and several thousand 'borrowed' signs. Isn't it pretty!

At the party people talked . . .

The Non-Beach Run

As the sun did not shine and it was pretty cold so we decided not to go to the beach. We had met at Ruby's in Stirling and had intended to head to North Maslin's Beach for a sand castle building competition and a picnic. Instead we went for a magical mystery tour of the Adelaide Hills.

First stop was Mount Bold Reservoir. We arrived at 3.45pm and the gates shut at 4pm. We had a very quick stop, look and fag (for those interested in cancer sticks) and then headed off towards Kangarilla but not before being nearly closed in by the over-enthusiastic gate-keeper.

We then headed towards Meadows and Macclesfield where we de-camped and enjoyed a bevvy or two with the Three Brothers and their Arms. We also witnessed a fine architectural discourse on the building of a ruin from Robyn ably assisted by Julie. They were rewarded with spontaneous applause and they didst please our saint in waiting so much that a gift parcel containing her favourite tipple among other things did suddenly and mysteriously appear unto them.

From thence we took various scenic routes to the fabled magnificence of Chateau Glenunga where the picnic finally took place.

On Sunday, November 15 run organisers Robyn and Julie made all the Qcar people get up really, really early to meet at a hot dusty park in Gawler. I believe everyone had to arrive at 4am. Can you believe it!

It was mainly hot because it was the last day of an official heat wave lasting for an unprecedented number of November days but a hand out of Chinese fans might have been nice! After a couple of tardy Mini owners arrived we all moved off in convoy and headed towards the Barossa.

Our first stop after a musical cars moment on Krondorf Road we headed up the little driven Nitschke Series of Pot Holes (that's its real name by-the-way) heading towards Jacobs Creek Retreat and a date with a garden and a cellar door. The garden was hot but lovely and then having taken . . . Ooooo . . . seconds to appreciate it in 38 degree heat everyone made their way hastily into the delightfully cool cellar door.

Inside we tasted wine - as is largely expected when one visits the Barossa and particularly a cellar door in the Barossa. (One rarely encounters Brazil nut tastings.) The delightful man behind the bar who served us said beverages told us all about the wines and winery, the name of which escapes me at the moment. Many of the wines were greatly enjoyed but I did see quite a few Mr Cabernet's Sauvignon meet Mr Spitoon.

Michelle examines the wine list very, very closely. After a sniff and a considered moment she decides not to taste it and picks up the moscato instead.

The on-lookers look on, lookingly.

Brenton tries out the hammock for a few seconds. The thought of spontaneous combustion from the heat of the day sees him find cooler surrounds with alacrity.

Making an entrance is very important and these three gents know how to impress.
"Today on the catwalk we have Clinton wearing blue polo shirt teamed with camouflage shorts - a classic, smart, man around town look that works well for outings in the Barossa. Next is Brenton in the faux American tourist look, loud but restrained, colourful and yet demure. Behind Jason struts the catwalk with poise and elegance. A round of applause please for our handsome models."

Organiser, or the person to blame (depending on your point of view), for the 'Photomania II - Reverse Cycle' run held on Sunday, August 16.

My achievements:

I managed to send Robyn, Julie and Liz to Nairne, for a second time.
My directions around Bird in Hand Road annoyed Bryan and Barry.
I sent Malcolm and Terry the wrong way up Drummond Road.
I got Hillary and Tom confused by the directions provided.

Not bad for one day's work . . . he he . . !

The run took us from an early coffee at Ruby's in Stirling through the Adelaide Hills to Lobethal where we had lunch at the Lobethal Bierhaus, a restaurant and micro-brewery. In between we visited Littlehampton, Nairne (some of us twice), Harrogate and Woodside.

At Ruby's in Stirling for a pre-run coffee. Sandy is unimpressed being caught on camera (iPhone) with breakfast. Also Julie, Michelle and Robyn.

As well as the three compulsory photo stops you are to take two extra photos along the route. The first photo is to be of your car in a scenic spot. The second is to be of your car near a landmark.
Directions
• If you’ve received this sheet of instructions you made it to Stirling and probably Ruby’s Cafe. Congratulations - not bad for a Sunday morning.
• After leaving Stirling head for the Bridgewater exit and the freeway. (Try not to head straight back to Adelaide!)
• You’re headed for the Mount Barker/Littlehampton freeway exit - along the way you will pass the Bridgewater exit and the Hahndorf exit.
• Take a left at the Mount Barker/Littlehampton exit and head towards Littlehampton.
• From Littlehampton head to Nairne and then go right through the town. After leaving Nairne you will be on a windy twisty road and you’re heading to Dawsley and your first compulsory photo stop. The magnificent urban complex of Dawsley is just on from Pyrites Road.
• Photo Stop One - Take a photo of your car with the Dawsley Telstra phone booth in the background.
• After taking your photo continue heading away from Nairne. Pass Donald St/Schmeiss Road and Dong Road (No Really!). Turn left on to Harrogate Road. (Or Harrowgate Road as it’s marked on my map. Sawpit Road is up on the right nearby.
• About 14 (about-ish maybe) kilometres along Harrogate Road you will come to the Dead Centre of Harrogate but not the geographic centre. If you get to The Glen Road you’ve gone too far, come back aways. You need to be where all the big pines and trees are.
• Photo Stop Two - On this gravel section you will pass a sign on the left, “Harrogate Cemetery”. Take a picture of your car in front of that sign.
• Continue along Harrogate Road until you reach the bustling metropolis that is Harrogate.
• Somewhere in the fine metropolis is the Harrogate Soldiers Memorial Hall, you’ll find it.
• Photo Stop Three - Take a photo of your car in front of the Harrogate Soldiers Memorial Hall.
• You are now on Mail Street, follow the street until is turns into Mail Road and drive and drive and drive and perhaps think about where you will take your landmark and scenery shots!
• There’s a T-Junction but continue along Mail Road.
• Mail Road then turns into Bird in Hand Road. Continue along Bird in Hand Road. You will come to a five way intersection but continue on Bird in Hand Road.
• As Bird in Hand ends it turns into Drummond Road as it takes a right hand sweep, follow this road for just a little way and turn left onto Pfeiffer Road.
•Follow Pfeiffer Road onto the Woodside/Nairne Road.
• At Nairne Road turn left and at the
T-Junction in the town of Woodside take a right heading through the town on the Onkaparinga Valley Road.
• A little way out of town you will find the Lobethal turn off. Turn left and head to Lobethal. (If you reach a town called Charleston you’ve gone too far!)
• Head into town and find the Main Street - just head downhill. The Lobethal Bierhaus is between the old Onkaparinga Woolen Mills (now a markets complex) and the start of the main street, at the Adelaide to Lobethal Road end.

The Copper Coast Classic Cavalcade is considered as one of the best and biggest of its type in Australia. The marvellous collection of classic cars and motorcycles will weave its way from Wallaroo, through Moonta and Port Hughes and then to Kadina, finishing at the Copper Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, Doswell Tce, Kadina. The route can be lined at almost any stage to get a good vantage point. (From Kernewek Lowender website).

Beach Run, January 17, 2009

Our first run for the new year (named the year of the 'blue iguana' by the natives of the Northern Ratak Archipelago) was a superb little number organised by Ron and Carl. They did a fantastic job and deserve a big thank you (insert applause here).

Caffe Paparazzi on Unley Road and enjoyed a refreshement. Our aim was the beach so taking to our cars we were resolutely led by Ron and Carl completely in the opposite direction. From Unley Road we made our way to Belair in the hills and then we skirted in around and over hills until we reached our destination which was gained by having a looksee at Hawthorndene, Coromandel Valley, the back of Blackwood, the Hope Valley area, Hackham and Old Noarlunga. A final a dash across town led us to the seaside paradise that is Port Noarlunga.

Arriving at about 6.30pm we plonked ourselves down on the sand and enjoyed a picnic dinner as the sun set and the stars came out. A magical evening to be outdoors everyone enjoyed a beverage of choice while have a good old yack.

It will also go down as the day we all met the T-Bird . . .

Christmas Party 2008

If you knew that the Berlin Wall was 26 miles long and that it was dismantled in 1989; that vermiculture employs the labour of worms; that the Lightburn Zeta was manufactured in Adelaide; that Harold Holt’s disappearance was actually an early alien abduction; that Groucho Marx wrote all of William Shakespeare’s plays (Harpo did the sonnets) and that Great Garbo didn’t want to be alone then you would have had a flying start at the 50 question examination (jovially described as a fun quiz) we all took part in at Robyn’s place in Brompton during QCar’s recent Christmas party.

An early highlight of the evening was Ron and Carl’s car brand themed cheese plate followed by the aforementioned ‘exam’ (won by Ron and Carl). This was followed by a shared barbecue dinner, dessert and a Kris Kringle distribution of gifts.

Robyn and Julie did a great job as hosts on the night and there were heaps of opportunities to mingle, crack a coldie and share a laugh.

Second Valley Run

The November trip was to Normanville and Second valley via Moana weir. Lunch was scheduled for St Leonard's Mill, but that seems to be a victim of the current nonsense (ie shut) so the Normanville Kiosk was fine, if a wee bit disorganised. We then proceeded to Second Valley and a short walk along the coastline to the ruins of the amazing old boat sheds. It was on the way to the sheds that Lucy (QCar's proud mascot) jumped / fell / was pushed into the ocean requiring a dramatic rescue by Julie, assisted by Graeme. You will be pleased to know, Lucy recovered in seconds and continued to enjoy a good run and roll on the beach. (Not sure about Julie). We had coffee and ice cream at the Second Valley kiosk before our journey home. The Bambino did an excellent job on the hills, even if it was in the bike lane a lot of the way and as the photos of it with Rod's Merc and Julie's Golf - it would appear size does matter! Don's new Merc was afforded it's well deserved accolades amid the great collection of the 'usual suspects'. Another great day. Thanks Rod.

Langhorne Creek Run

Our QCar run on October 19 was organised by Hillary. It was great day out. We had a tour of Bleasdale winery and learnt all about the history of the family that established the enterprise. A rain shower forced us from enjoying a picnic at the local park so we were taken off to Hillary’s relative’s place where we dined in their backyard. They too, the Cleggets, are vignerons and wine makers so we were able to sample their ‘brews’ while having our lunch.

A big thanks to Hillary for preparing the talk and the tour. Great stuff!

The splendid red gum lever press, hand-sawn in the 1890's, is well worth a look. Built in 1892, the Press is still used today. The lever weighs 3.5 tons, its 15 metres long and stands 7 metres high. Today's winery has the latest technology but still maintains the family traditions - the Pott's philosophy of producing honest, consistent, reliable wines, which are receiving accolades throughout the world." Bay to Birdwood

On September 28 QCAr spent the morning by the side of North East Road eyeing off a two hour procession of vintage and veteran cars – the biennial Bay to Birdwood Run. Clinton and Brenton had organised a barbecue (complete with gluten free sausages) to eat while we watched the cars go by. I had great fun taking photos and took lots and lots.

This little fella just wanted to have his photo taken with his beloved Melbourne Bitter. Who was I to refuse?

Port Broughton Weekend Away

On September 19-21 QCar went to Port Broughton for a weekend. We stayed in nice cabins at the Port Broughton Caravan Park, on the foreshore of the town. On the Saturday we drove inland and visited a few towns, the highlight being a visit to Melrose and the North Star Hotel and the cellar door which operates from there. They make a good sparkly red.

That evening we visited Robyn and Julie’s shack just up the road from Port Broughton (they organised the trip away). We got there just in time to watch the sun go down. And unfortunately also just in time for the mosquito horde to descend. That night we dined at Palate to Palette in Port Broughton’s main street.

On the Sunday we visited Port Germein and Wallaroo. We took a drive along the beach at Wallaroo and went for a walk down to one of the most unique houses/shacks around. The shack is 100m from the shore on a spit of rocks in the main bay of the town and is surrounded by public land and beach. A colony of shags seem to reside a few metres from the shack’s front door.

We had lunch at the new pub, restaurant, apartment and docking facility next at the new canal estate in Wallaroo. We saw the new ferry too, that takes cars across the gulf saving drivers 400km off their trip.

Lunch was great and as it was a beautiful day.

McLaren Vale - The Highways And The Bi-Ways: Rosemount Winery & The Victory Hotel

The July run began with breakfast and coffee at Cafe Mondiali on Unley Road. Bitterly cold, as we left the cafe the heaven's let loose with a mizzly drizzle. But once in the cars we all turned up our heaters and enjoyed a warm ride through the Adelaide Hills. We travelled through fog and rain all the way through the Hills and into the McLaren Vale area. Our first stop was the Rosemount Cellar Door. Here we tasted wines, looked at the art and enjoyed the ambiance. Next it was off for lunch at the Victory Hotel up the road at Sellicks Hill. Evading Main South Road for as long as possible, we travelled close to the Willunga foothills and then round to the Sellicks Hill area before having the join that road 'more travelled'. We enjoyed a fine lunch and then late in the afternoon made our separate ways home . . . or to wherever QCar members go when not on a car run.

Bryan's Run to Ashbourne

On Sunday May, 18 Bryan led a run to the Greenman Inn at Ashbourne. The route took us from a breakfast start at the Queen Sreet Cafe, Croyden to Marion to pick up others and then taking the southern bypass we regrouped at McLaren Vale. From there we headed to Willunga, up Willunga Hill and then to Mount Compass and across to Ashbourne. A lovely drive, passing some beautiful countryside - all green from the recent rains.

Clare Valley Weekend Away

It’s one of the most important things in life – lunch. And it looked like we were going to miss out . . . and go hungry.

Our group of car, and more latterly wine enthusiasts, had lingered long and admiringly at the Mitchell Wines Cellar Door in the Clare Valley. Our car club QCar was in the valley for a weekend of driving, dining and wining – responsibly of course. However, we had arrived at Mitchell’s around lunch time and as we had enjoyed the hospitality and information supplied by our cellar door hand for some time we were now going to have to rush to get to a place to eat before all the Clare Valley eateries kitchen’s closed for the afternoon.

Bidding our host adieu, we headed out through the rain that had made its appearance known by thundering down on the iron roof of the cellar door and jumped into our cars. The little convoy headed towards the highway and Watervale Hotel.

As we arrived we saw a large group depart from the hotel. It didn’t look good, and yes, the kitchen had closed for the afternoon. Back in the cars we headed south hoping that the Rising Sun at Auburn would be open. It was but there were no tables for a group our size. Being hungry and using great ingenuity we all crammed on to the one small table that was left and announced that the crush would do – we wanted lunch.

And lunch we had - and all the more memorable and pleasant for the hardships encountered along the way.

QCar’s first big weekend trip away happened in April on the long weekend. The crew arrived at our lodgings, the Clare Cabins on the Thursday night. After settling in and finding that one of Rod Blanchard’s friends was coincidentally enjoying a stay there too we all had a drink and a chat and settled in for the night.

On the Friday we headed off to Mount Surmon Winery (it has a lovely art gallery) and then we went on to Jim Barry, where we all decided that you could enjoy a very fine red from this establishment without paying an outrageous price for their top-of-the-line wine.

Breakfast at the cabins brought us all back together in the morning and ready to start the day.

Lunch on Friday found us at the Magpie and Stump at Mintaro. After soup, schnitzels, burgers and other pub fare had been consumed we headed for Martindale Hall. Half the group did the tour while the rest lingered outside enjoying the surrounds.

Before going back to the cabins for a home-cooked three course meal (Thai-style prawns, baked fetta with herbs, roast beef with all the trimmings) we sidestepped to Pauletts Wines. The Trillians sparkling riesling and the superb view over the Polish Hill River Valley made this a enjoyable experience.

The dinner, cooked by David Jenkins, was adored by all. It was, naturally, accompanied by a sampling of the goods recently selected at the cellar door.

Saturday started a bit more slowly than had Friday but shortly we were on our way.

After lunch at the Rising Sun we visited Mount Horrocks Wines and then we headed back to the cabins for a rest.

The rest was needed as, we were to travel to Burra and the White Cedars Café for dinner. But first we had to find the key’s to Rod’s Teutonic Tank (an 80s S-Class Mercedes). After several searches through clothing and floors it was decided to search the ground outside to see if Rod had dropped them there. Salvation came in the form of eagle-eyed John, who spotted them on the ground, saving a trip back to Adelaide to get a spare set of keys!

Dinner at White Cedars was a great success. Deciding to have a banquet, we left teh organising of the food to Balinese chef, Putu. It was absolutely scrumptious.

On Sunday everyone made their own way back to Adelaide and most made it to the opening of QCar member Harvey Schiller’s exhibition at the Tin Cat Café and Gallery.

QCar’s first weekend away was deemed a success and enjoyed by all who attended. Our next run where we will stay overnight will be held later in the year when we head to Yorke Peninsula, other single-day runs are held monthly.

The car club had a run out to West Beach for a picnic on January 19. We met at Rod’s, had a drink and a chat. We all examined Rod’s latest toy, a 197(7)? Mercedes S Class. It’s his second one! We then drove off to West Beach and ate on the sand near the Lifesaving club. A few of us went for an evening dip as well.

Victor Harbor Run - November 2007

Here are some photographs I (Harvey) took from the run to Victor Harbor held on Sunday, November 18. The run began with a meet up and coffee at Cafe Mondiali on Unley Road. The small convoy then headed to Mount Compass to pick up another group of people and then headed for the Grosvenor Hotel at Victor Harbor. Lunch was duly consumed at the hotel, which featured a miniature working railway line with train that ran around the top of the dining room walls. After lunch the group headed over to Granite Island. After a brief walk around the area we jumped back in the cars and headed towards Myponga Reservoir. We visited the lookout and then drove over the dam wall and then everyone headed home.

Macclesfield Run

On Sunday, July 29 QCar went or its first car run. Hillary had planned the route which took in a great number of hills roads. Eschewing towns and built up areas, Hillary had us travel on any number of byways taking us in all directions and sometimes almost circumnavigating a town just to avoid having to go through its main street. In this way we saw a great deal of countryside and travelled on some very unfamiliar roads. Our destination was Macclesfield where we dined at the Three Brother's Arms. After lunch we headed just down the road to Longview Winery, where we sampled the tipples on offer.

A fender with luscious curves. Achingly beautiful mags with delicious tyres that fill their arch. Doors that ‘thud’. Raked bonnets, twin chrome exhausts, a good thick tread pattern, a supercharged engine, hitting the red line, a tight turning circle and exhilarating acceleration.

If it has been raised by any of these words, you’re one of us – a car enthusiast.

You may not have known before. You may have actually denied that you love the deep double bass thrum of a V8 or the silent glide of a technologically marvellous Prius.

But you’re a potential QCar candidate.

If Paris Hilton or Brad Pitt pale to insignificance when a Ferrari is to be had, well that is just confirmation. It’s being emotive. Emoting.

It’s all about the feeling, the freedom, the open road, the possible.

QCar started some three years ago in South Australia as MotaFrenz. At Melbourne’s Midsummer Festival three years ago, Motafrenz SA co-founder Nick Horn was introduced to MotaFrenz Victoria. He decided to bring the concept back to our state. However, over time the members felt that a wholly South Australian group should be created and thus QCar came into being.

QCar is a subsidiary of Team Adelaide and a group of gay and lesbian people and their friends who are passionate about their vehicles. QCar aficionados enjoy driving and socialising with like-minded people. As Motafrenz SA, the group has had representation in two Pride Marches and at two Feast picnics. The group has appeared in Blaze on numerous occasions.

Over the last three years the car club has had weekends away in Robe and Burra, various lunches, dinners, winery visits, curry nights and car runs around the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and McLaren Vale. Numerous exciting events are planned for the future. QCar members believe the group fills a niche in the GLBT community. It resonates with a broad cross-section of people coming from all walks of life, gender and age.

QCar looks forward to working with Team Adelaide. And perhaps we’ll see you on one of the group’s car runs.
